FAQs
Curious about how therapy at Parts of Us can help you thrive? Our FAQs demystify the process, explaining what therapy involves, what your first steps look like, and the approaches we offer to support your emotional well-being.

What is therapy?
Therapy, also known as counselling or psychotherapy, is a collaborative and confidential process that involves a trained mental health professional helping individuals, couples, or groups to understand and manage emotional challenges, psychological issues, and life difficulties.
The primary goal of therapy is to promote mental well-being, improve emotional resilience, and enhance overall quality of life.

Counsellors vs. Psychologist
Counsellors and psychologists both work with mental health, however, they do so in different ways. A counsellor typically works with clients to help them explore their feelings and work through life issues, while a psychologist typically works with clients to diagnose mental health issues and develop a treatment plan.

What to expect?
Your first session will be a chance for you to get to know your counsellor better and for them to get to know you. Your counsellor will ask you questions to understand your background, your current life circumstances, and your goals for therapy. They will also explain the counselling process, what to expect during sessions and any other relevant information.

How long does a typically session last?
The length of a session is generally 50 minutes. However, some clients may opt for 80-minute sessions depending on their individual needs.

For the first session (intake session), we usually recommend 80 minutes to ensure that there is enough time for history taking and addressing the client's challenges.

How many sessions do I need?
The number of sessions of therapy you need is ultimately up to you. Your therapist will work with you to create a treatment plan that suits your needs and goals for therapy.

We understand that financial considerations can impact your ability to seek therapy regularly. Your mental well-being is important to us, and we are committed to working together to find a suitable arrangement.

How much can I tell you?
You can tell your therapist as much or as little as you are comfortable with. Your therapist is here to provide you with a safe and non-judgmental space to explore your feelings and thoughts.
Anything that is discussed during your sessions is confidential.

Are my sessions confidential?
Yes! We understand the importance of confidentiality when it comes to therapy.
All information shared between you and your therapist will remain confidential and will not be shared with any third parties, unless it is required by law or if there is a risk of harm to yourself or another person.

Will you tell my parents what I have shared in the session if I am a minor?
We take confidentiality very seriously. If you are a minor, your therapist will work with you and your parents to ensure that everyone is comfortable with the level of disclosure appropriate for your sessions.

When should I go for therapy?
You might consider therapy if you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, persistently sad, or struggling to cope with life's challenges. Professional support can offer clarity and relief when your mental well-being is impacted.

But therapy isn't just for difficult times. The "right time" is whenever you feel a desire for growth, deeper understanding, or a dedicated space to explore your inner world.

What issues warrant therapy?
We specialise in helping individuals with a variety of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, and more. However, it is important to note that therapy is not just for those with mental health issues. It can also be a great way to work through life changes, talk out difficult emotions, or just as a means of personal growth.

Is it possible to talk to someone before I decide to commit to therapy?
Absolutely! We offer free initial consultations (15 minutes) to discuss your needs and answer any questions you may have. This provides an opportunity to get to know the therapist and determine if they are the right fit for you

What if I cannot connect with my therapist?
We understand that the connection between a client and therapist is essential to the therapy process. If you feel like you are not connecting with your therapist, please reach out to us and we will provide you with a referral who may be more suited to your needs.
